On the northwestern shore of Qinghai Lake, this 1 km² island welcomes nearly 100,000 migratory birds each spring, with over 220 species recorded.

Bird Island spans approximately 1 km² on the northwestern shore of Qinghai Lake, China's largest saltwater lake, roughly 300 km west of Xining. Formed as water levels receded, it has become one of the Tibetan plateau's principal breeding grounds for migratory birds, welcoming nearly 100,000 birds each spring from Yunnan, Guizhou, and the Bay of Bengal.

Why visit Bird Island

The site hosts over 220 recorded species across a modest area, making it one of Asia's densest ornithological observation points. Five rare species are regularly visible:

  • the bar-headed goose, which crosses the Himalayas in migration each year;
  • the Tibetan gull, endemic to the high plateaus;
  • the great black-headed gull, one of the world's largest gull species;
  • the cormorant;
  • the whooper swan, present in winter and early spring.

Beyond the birdlife, the setting rivals the birds themselves: sparse grasslands, turquoise waters of Qinghai Lake, snow-capped peaks in the background, and high-altitude skies above 3,200 meters.

A history marked by avian flu

The island was formed by the gradual retreat of Qinghai Lake's waters, transforming a shallow bank into an islet. Its flat, verdant surface, surrounded by fish-rich waters, and mild spring climate made it a privileged breeding ground for migratory birds.

In 2005, the site witnessed one of the most severe outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza ever recorded in wild birds. More than 5% of the global bar-headed goose population is believed to have succumbed to the virus, with over 10,000 birds dying on the site within three to four months. In May 2006, the journal Nature revealed that an experimental breeding program combining domestic and wild birds had been conducted near the lake, aimed at restoring wild populations decimated by hunting and habitat loss. This episode placed Qinghai Lake at the center of international research on avian virus circulation.

What to see on site

Visits are conducted from viewing platforms and elevated observatories designed to minimize disturbance to the colonies. Depending on the season, you may observe:

  • nesting colonies of bar-headed geese and gulls, particularly dense in May-June;
  • the fledglings' departure in late spring and early summer;
  • cormorant gatherings on the rocks;
  • flocks of Tibetan gulls flying over the northwestern shore of the lake.

The village of Niao Dao, nearby, serves as the main entry point and offers basic services (simple dining, modest accommodation).

When to visit

The optimal period runs from April to July, when colonies are established and fledglings take flight. May and June offer the greatest species diversity. Outside this window, the site remains accessible but ornithological interest diminishes significantly, and altitude makes winter extremely harsh.

How to get there

By train from Xining

Morning trains connect Xining to Haergai, a small city on the lake's northern shore, in approximately 5 hours. From Haergai, taxis and private vehicles provide access to Bird Island or Niao Dao village.

By long-distance bus

Buses depart from Xining's bus station toward the Tibetan hamlet of Heimahe, on the lake's southwestern shore. From Heimahe, Niao Dao is reached by taxi at a moderate rate.

Practical information

  • Duration of visit: allow approximately 2 hours on site.
  • Entrance fee: paid entry at moderate rates, higher during peak season (spring-summer) than low season.
  • Opening hours: daytime access only; early morning hours are most favorable for observation.
  • Altitude: above 3,200 m; bring warm clothing and sun protection even in summer.
  • Access: designated nature reserve; access may be restricted during certain periods to protect colonies. Verify conditions before traveling.

Nearby attractions

Bird Island is part of a broader natural and cultural circuit around Qinghai Lake and the eponymous province. From Xining, the provincial capital, you can extend your itinerary toward major sites in northwestern China, such as the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves in Xinjiang or the Hexigten Geopark in Inner Mongolia for those seeking high-altitude landscapes.

Frequently asked questions

April to July, and especially May and June, when colonies are in full activity and fledglings are taking flight.

Two options: a morning train from Xining to Haergai (approximately 5 hours) followed by a taxi transfer, or a long-distance bus to Heimahe then a taxi to Niao Dao.

Approximately 2 hours are sufficient to tour the observatories and enjoy the panoramic views of Qinghai Lake.
