Ruili is a city in Yunnan province and an important frontier post with Myanmar.

History

Due to its proximity to Myanmar, Ruili was once notorious for its turbulent nights, casinos, and a permissive atmosphere that attracted affluent young travelers.

In 1990, when borders opened with Myanmar, Ruili became a transit hub for all manner of goods. This fueled its growth but also its darker side, with trafficking in weapons and drugs flourishing.

With support from Beijing, local authorities managed to halt these illicit activities and clean the city of its criminal element.

Today

Ruili today radiates a distinctive atmosphere shaped by its Chinese and Burmese blend. The bustling markets filled with Burmese jade merchants are vibrantly alive and offer a perfect glimpse into the town's multicultural character.

The ambiance, ethnic diversity, and markets represent Ruili's main attractions, making it a pleasure to wander aimlessly through its winding streets.

The countryside surrounding Ruili is easily accessible by bicycle. Pedaling off the beaten path will lead you to one of the minority villages, whose residents welcome visitors warmly.

On the city's outskirts, the Golden Duck Pagoda is worth a stop. A bit further afield, several charming temples and small pagodas stand amid lively surroundings, offering plenty of interest for photography enthusiasts in particular.

Ruili enjoys a warm and humid subtropical climate.

Summers are long and winters very short. The dry season runs from December to April, while the rainy season occurs between May and October.

Average monthly temperatures range from 14.8°C in January to 25.5°C in June. The annual average temperature stands at 21.6°C.

Mangshi Dehong Airport is the nearest airport to Ruili, approximately 2 hours away by taxi. It is served by flights from Kunming.

Long-distance Bus

From Kunming's West Bus Station, buses depart for Ruili. The journey takes between 14 and 20 hours, typically around 16. According to regulations, buses are not permitted to drive at night, which extends travel time.

The town is small enough to explore on foot. For excursions into the surrounding area, you can rent bicycles or take a taxi for longer distances.
