Xianggong Hill (Xiangshan)

Nature & LandscapesActivities & Adventure

Perched above Xingping, Xianggong Hill reveals the karst panorama gracing the 20-yuan banknote: limestone pinnacles, the Li River, and unforgettable dawn mists.

Xianggong Hill rises on the eastern bank of the Li River, near the town of Xingping in Yangshuo District (Guangxi). This limestone promontory offers panoramic views of the karst peaks that inspired the design of the 20-yuan banknote. Landscape photographers from around the world converge here at dawn to capture morning mist suspended between the pinnacles.

Essential Practical Information

  • Access: from Xingping, on foot via a marked trail (approximately 30–40 minutes depending on pace).
  • Footwear: hiking shoes recommended — the trail is steep and can be slippery in wet conditions.
  • Suggested duration: 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the sunrise and descend at a leisurely pace.
  • Best time: sunrise, especially in autumn and winter when mist is densest.

What You'll See

From the summit, the Li River winds between dozens of karst pinnacles. The panorama reproduces almost exactly the motif engraved on the 20-yuan banknote, making it an instantly recognizable visual landmark. In clear weather, the reflections of the peaks in the water create striking symmetry across the landscape.

History and Context

The Guilin-Yangshuo karst formed over hundreds of millions of years through limestone dissolution. The Xingping region, less frequented than Yangshuo town itself, has retained a rural character. Xianggong Hill owes its international prominence to landscape photographers who circulated its images from the 2000s onward, well before the site received official development.

Highlights of Your Visit

Sunrise Through the Mist

Between October and March, morning mist regularly envelops the pinnacles. The raking light of sunrise creates layers of depth between the summits. Arriving at least an hour before dawn allows you to secure your spot on the viewing platform.

The Li River Panorama

The Li River, visible below, is traversed by bamboo rafts ferrying tourists from Guilin. Watching these craft glide between the pinnacles from above provides a striking sense of scale to the landscape.

The Town of Xingping

On your descent, the old town of Xingping deserves a stop: cobblestone lanes, grey-brick houses, and small local noodle restaurants compose an authentic scene, far removed from the bustle of Yangshuo.

Photography Tips

The summit platform offers multiple vantage points. Frame wide to include the curve of the river and at least five or six pinnacles in depth. A tripod is essential in the dim light of early morning. Avoid days of heavy rain: mist becomes too thick and obscures the relief. A polarizing filter reduces parasitic reflections on the water mid-morning.

Location and Access

Xingping lies approximately 25 km northeast of Yangshuo. From Yangshuo, local buses and taxis serve Xingping regularly. From Guilin, river cruises stop at Xingping — one of the most pleasant ways to arrive. The climbing trail departs from the town; signs indicate the direction. Wheelchair access is limited due to the gradient.

Nearby Attractions

  • Old Town of Xingping — Ming and Qing-era lanes within minutes' walk of the trail entrance.
