Tianchi Lake

·

110 km from Urumqi, Tianchi Lake spreads its emerald waters at 2,000 m altitude at the foot of Mount Tianshan, between hiking trails and Kazakh yurts.

Tianchi Lake, whose name means "heavenly lake" or "lake of paradise," is a crater lake located in Tianshan National Park, approximately 110 km east of Urumqi, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of Chine. Perched at 2,000 meters above sea level, it stretches 3 km long and 700 m wide, fed by snowmelt from Mount Tianshan which encircles it.

Why visit Tianchi Lake

The contrast is striking for those arriving from the desert landscape of Xinjiang: just hours from Urumqi, the scenery shifts toward a high-altitude valley where water takes on emerald hues at the foot of snow-capped peaks. The site, classified as an AAAAA-category natural park (China's highest tourism rating), combines scenic interest, cultural dimension with Kazakh communities settled on its shores, and accessibility from the regional capital.

The altitude ensures comfortable temperatures even in the height of summer, when Urumqi and the Tarim Basin swelter. It is one of the most visited natural getaways in northern Xinjiang, and one of the few places where one can experience the Kazakh pastoral lifestyle in an organized manner.

History and legends

In 1783, the lake was nicknamed Nanming ("southern sea") by Mingliang, a Qing commander stationed in Urumqi, who had its description recorded. The name "Tianchi" became established later and echoes another heavenly lake, further east, located in the Changbaishan range.

Several local legends surround the site. One tells of waters harboring a monster named Kun, an aquatic creature lurking in the depths. Another evokes an imperial couple separated by the lake's waters, a recurring motif in Chinese folklore around high-altitude bodies of water. In 2006, the National Tourism Administration developed a structured tourist zone around the lake, with marked trails, boat docks, and visitor facilities.

What to see and do

Circumnavigating the lake

A marked trail allows for a partial walk around the lake. The water, a deep blue-green, contrasts with the spruces covering the slopes and snow-capped peaks in the background. Several viewpoints offer different angles on the basin.

Boat excursion

Small boats offer crossings that allow you to reach less-frequented shores and appreciate the true scale of the lake.

Hiking in the Tianshan

Several trails depart from the lake toward neighboring valleys and alpine meadows. Hikes range from one-hour walks to full-day treks. Elevation gain remains moderate for short loops.

Night in a Kazakh yurt

Kazakh herders settled on the shores offer accommodation in traditional yurts, draped with carpets and colorful hangings. It's an opportunity to share a pastoral meal and gain insight into a semi-nomadic lifestyle that follows the seasons. A horseback ride around the lake or through summer pasture valleys is generally possible from these camps.

When to go

The main tourist season runs from late May through early October. July and August are the busiest months: temperatures are pleasant at altitude, alpine meadows are lush, but trails and boat docks are crowded.

June and September offer a good compromise between favorable weather and lighter crowds. In winter (November to March), the lake freezes partially, infrastructure operates at reduced capacity, and access may be restricted depending on snowfall. To avoid tour groups, many travelers choose to stay overnight in a yurt and enjoy the site during early morning and late afternoon hours.

Practical information

  • Altitude: 2,000 m – bring a warm layer, even in summer
  • Hours: extended opening during high season (April-October), reduced hours in winter – verify before visiting
  • Fees: park entrance ticket, additional charge for internal shuttle and cable car, yurt accommodation with meals included depending on packages. Plan for at least half a day, a full day if hiking or staying overnight
  • Classification: AAAAA-category natural park

How to get there

The lake is accessible from Urumqi, approximately 110 km away. Daily tourist buses depart in season from the north bus station or People's Square. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours travel time. Once at the park entrance, access to the lake itself is exclusively by internal shuttle (electric bus) and, optionally, by cable car. Private vehicles cannot drive up to the shore.

A day trip from Urumqi is feasible, but the most immersive option remains a round trip over two days with a night in a yurt.

Nearby attractions

  • Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, the logical starting point for a visit, with its regional museum and grand bazaar
  • Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, a Buddhist troglodyte site further east, on the Silk Road
  • Hexigten Geopark, another major Chinese natural area to extend a scenic journey

Frequently asked questions

Half a day is enough to walk around the lake, visit a viewpoint, and take a short boat crossing. For serious hiking or sleeping in a yurt with Kazakhs, allow two days.

Yes. Kazakh herders settled around the lake offer accommodation in traditional yurts, usually with meals included. This is the most authentic option for enjoying the site outside peak hours.

The site is open year-round, but the experience varies greatly by season. High season runs from late May through early October. In winter, access depends on snow conditions and several services close.

The lake sits at 2,000 meters. At this altitude, acute mountain sickness is rare. Simple breathing difficulty may occur during the steepest climbs.

Seasonal tourist buses connect Urumqi to the park entrance in 2 to 2.5 hours. From the entrance, a mandatory internal shuttle takes you to the lake's edges, optionally followed by a cable car ride.
