In northeastern Chine, Wudalianchi conceals a UNESCO geopark of 14 volcanoes and 5 lava lakes. Complete guide to exploring this lesser-known Heilongjiang destination.

Wudalianchi is a nature reserve located in Heilongjiang province, approximately 250 km from the provincial capital Harbin. Deep within a volcanic region, close to the Russian border, Wudalianchi harbors a geological marvel that today forms a national park.

History

The geological national park developed over time, beginning with volcanic activity more than one million years before Christ. Its landscape transformed dramatically between 1719 and 1721 during a major volcanic eruption. This eruption blocked various courses of the Bai River and created the five dam lakes of Wudalianchi. Geothermal activity then triggered a succession of reactions that produced unique, potable, and mineral-rich water with therapeutic properties.

Today

The Wudalianchi National Park comprises a truly unique natural landscape in northeastern Heilongjiang. Renowned today for its mineral waters with medicinal properties and its volcanic formations, the geopark welcomes numerous visitors annually. The name of the Wudalianchi volcanic field means "Five Connected Pools" in reference to the 5 picturesque lava-dammed lakes. The area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Composed of 14 volcanoes spread across 720 km², the park reveals to its visitors a breathtaking vista of ash cones and natural lakes. With its pure air, serene environment, and stunning landscape, the park has become a rare scenic destination not to be missed during a journey through Heilongjiang. The abundance of volcanic ridges, complemented by lakes and mineral springs, make it an excellent choice for leisure tourism as well as peaceful retreats with thermal cure treatments. Laohei Mountain, accessible via a 1-hour hike, offers spectacular views over the volcanic field and an impressive crater. Lava fields can also be explored by following wooden boardwalks installed above the terrain.

Climate

Near the windy and frigid prairies of Siberia, the Wudalianchi area experiences a cold, temperate continental monsoon climate with long, very cold winters and short but pleasant summers. The best time to visit Wudalianchi geological park is from May to September, to enjoy sunny weather and favorable temperatures.

The small town of Wudalianchi has a coach station connecting to the nature park from Harbin, Qiqihar, and Bei'an.
