Lijiang
UNESCO-listed old town, Naxi cobbled streets and sweeping views of Mount Yulong: Lijiang is the essential stop in northern Yunnan, between Dali and Shangri-La.
Name: Lijiang
Chinese name: 丽江, 麗江
Province: Yunnan
Status: Prefecture-level city
Population: 1,126,646 inhabitants
Area: 7,485 km²
A captivating tourist destination in the Yunnan province, Lijiang, like Dali, is divided into two distinct zones: the historic old town and the modern city. Exceptionally charming, Lijiang offers a refreshing escape with its mountain streams, breathtaking snow-capped peaks, and a natural landscape inhabited and respected by its welcoming population. Lijiang is renowned as the homeland of the Naxi minority, one of the 55 ethnic groups of Chine.
History
Lijiang's history stretches back to the Warring States period (476 BC – 221 BC). With the advent of the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the local economy flourished, notably through the development of the tea trade route, which greatly facilitated communication between Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan. In 1996, an earthquake devastated much of the city but caused virtually no damage to the old town and its traditional buildings. In 1997, Lijiang's old town was inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list as an "exceptional ancient city in a spectacular landscape."
Today
Cobbled streets, ancient timber-framed houses and waterways interweave throughout this city situated at 2,400 meters altitude. Lijiang ranks among the most-visited cities in northern Yunnan, with its popularity continuing to attract new travelers each year. Lijiang is distinctive in being divided into two markedly different areas: the old town and the new city. The contrast between the two is striking. The new town has developed on the periphery of the ancient settlement and now hosts many locals who have relocated from the old town to make room for tourism. Brimming with character, the old town is steeped in Naxi culture with its period houses, narrow lanes and waterways. Hotels are predominantly housed in Naxi buildings, offering an exceptional setting for a well-deserved night's rest. Wander through its winding streets and succumb to the temptation of a souvenir shop or a restaurant serving local cuisine. The view over the surrounding hills is extraordinary and enhances the beauty of the place. Moving away from the city, the surroundings of Lijiang are particularly alluring for travelers seeking escape. The celebrated Tiger Leaping Gorge and Mount Yulong offer superb hiking opportunities. Be sure not to miss the Black Dragon Pool and its magnificent mountain vista.
Climate
Lijiang's weather is relatively pleasant with mild temperatures. The average annual temperature ranges between 13°C and 20°C with little variation between winter and spring. In winter, the mountains block the severe cold from northern Chine, allowing for pleasant temperatures. In summer, temperatures can drop rapidly due to increased rainfall during this season.
Since tourism has developed in the region, reaching Lijiang has become straightforward.
Air
Lijiang Airport (LJG) is located approximately 28 kilometers south of the city center. Currently, there are connections from Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Guiyang. However, most visitors prefer to fly to Kunming first, then travel to Lijiang by air, train, or long-distance bus.
Train
Approximately 10 km separates the old town from Lijiang Railway Station. It is currently the second largest railway station in Yunnan after Kunming's. The station primarily operates trains to and from Kunming, Dali, and Qujing.
Long-Distance Bus
Currently, the most convenient way to reach the city is by bus. Located on the border of Sichuan and Tibet provinces, Lijiang has developed a relatively comprehensive road network. It is straightforward for visitors to travel between the city and other destinations in Yunnan province, such as Kunming, Dali, and Shangri-La. Moreover, there are regular buses between the city and Sichuan province.
With the development of tourism, Lijiang has established a bus network serving the new city. To navigate the old town, it is possible to rent bicycles.
