Shaoxing is a charming small city located about sixty kilometers from Hangzhou in Zhejiang province. With its hutongs and canals crossed by small bridges, visiting Shaoxing can be laden with romance.

History

Shaoxing served as the capital of the Yue Kingdom from 770 to 211 BC, known as Guiji, and was an important administrative and agricultural hub.

The name "Shaoxing" was bestowed upon the city in 1127 by Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song dynasty.

The city was the birthplace of many influential figures, including Yu the Great and the celebrated writer Lu Xun.

Today

Shaoxing is a charming city which, despite its growing population, has managed to preserve its charms and unhurried pace. This small haven for romantics remains relatively undiscovered by tourists despite its authenticity and relaxed atmosphere.

The city can be explored by boat along its waterways, following the canals between ancient houses and residences.

Its long history has left behind vestiges worth discovering during a short stay in Shaoxing. The mausoleum of Yu the Great and the former residence of Lu Xun are among the city's principal attractions. A visit to the Orchid Pavilion, also known as the Lanting Pavilion, is highly worthwhile, particularly for its lovely gardens, a sanctuary dedicated to the celebrated calligrapher Wang Xizhi.

To add to the appeal of a visit, the charming city is surrounded by verdant nature comprised of hills and rivers.

Shaoxing has also become renowned for its remarkable yellow wine.

Climate

With its subtropical monsoon climate, Shaoxing experiences warm and humid weather, with four distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is 16.5°C. The highest temperatures are generally recorded in July, averaging 29.2°C, while the lowest temperatures are registered in January, averaging 4.8°C.

Rain is more frequent from May to August, immersing the city in a pleasant atmosphere.

From Shanghai, buses also connect to Shaoxing.

Shaoxing has a small but efficient bus network. Taxis are also available to transport you from one point to another quickly.
