Located 90 km southeast of Kunming, Shilin Stone Forest unfolds its UNESCO-listed karst peaks across 80 hectares, homeland of the Sani people and birthplace of the Ashima legend.

The Shilin Stone Forest, situated approximately 90 km southeast of Kunming, ranks among the most coveted scenic sites in Yunnan.

This natural wonder, formed by karst peaks, is undoubtedly a destination not to be missed during your trip to Yunnan.

History

Marine fossils dating back 270 million years have been discovered at the Shilin site, proving that the sea once covered this area.

Rain and erosion subsequently favored the formation of these limestone peaks.

Exploring the Stone Forest

The stone forest itself extends across nearly 80 hectares and sits within an immense geological park spanning 26,000 hectares.

Once you arrive on site, the grandeur of the rocks and their arrangement will astound you. After purchasing your ticket, simply follow the well-maintained trails winding between the impressive rocky pinnacles. Though the entrance may be crowded with tourists, the site is so vast that you'll find moments of calm and serenity amid the landscape.

Your visit will reveal a magnificent karst landscape unlike any other. In the more remote corners of the developed park, you may spot villagers or farmers at work in the surrounding rice paddies. The approximately 5 km walk takes you through a maze of stones, limestone peaks, and lush vegetation interspersed with small ponds and streams.

Small paths branch off from the main route, allowing you to escape the crowds and experience the magical atmosphere that pervades this place. A few guides dressed in traditional costumes can help you find your way.

Your visit concludes at an attractive elevated pavilion offering breathtaking views over the stone forest.

It's also possible to visit this picturesque site at nightfall. The interplay of light reflecting off the rocks creates an entirely different spectacle. Some say this reveals the magic of the place even more vividly.

The visit typically requires at least 3–4 hours to fully appreciate the park.

When to Visit?

The stone forest is open year-round. However, it's best to avoid the rainy season in summer.

Also avoid visiting during Chine public holidays, as the site becomes overwhelmed by large groups of Chinese tourists, diminishing the experience.

Try to depart Kunming in the morning to arrive as early as possible.

Regular buses depart from Kunming's East Bus Station and drop you near the entrance. Keep in mind that tour buses may stop along the way to visit markets, shops, or temples to earn commissions.

Opening Hours and Admission Fees

The stone forest is open from 8 am to 6 pm.

Admission is 170 RMB per person.
