Chuandixia Historic Village
Ninety kilometers from Beijing, Chuandixia unfolds 600 Ming-Qing houses clinging to mountainsides. A village frozen in time, ideal for a heritage excursion.
Located in Mentougou District approximately 90 km northwest of Beijing, the Chuandixia historic village is an ancient settlement that has earned recognition as a major tourist attraction.
Nestled within an authentic natural landscape worthy of a postcard, Chuandixia embodies the distinctive characteristics of traditional villages typical to Beijing. Its proximity to the capital has earned it widespread acclaim among travelers worldwide, particularly those passionate about history, painting, and photography.
History
Originally from the Hongdong District of Shanxi Province, the descendants of Han Shining founded the village of Chuandixia. Han Shining was a highly important military officer during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Ming Dynasty. This is precisely why nearly all village inhabitants share the same family name derived from Han.
Following 1980–1990, after the construction of National Road 109 near the village, Chuandixia's population declined and became economically inactive. Young people left for cities in search of employment, leaving behind children and elderly residents.
Since 2006, Chuandixia historic village has been listed among major historical and cultural sites protected under China's National Heritage Protection Services.
Visiting Chuandixia Historic Village
Perched at 650 meters elevation across 10,000 square meters, Chuandixia sits on the gentle slopes of the Jingxi mountainous region. Surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges, the village can be challenging to locate. Viewed from surrounding heights, its clever hillside construction becomes evident. Some even believe it mirrors the architectural plans of the famous Potala Palace in Tibet. You'll be the judge once you arrive!
Most dwellings, built in the traditional Siheyuan architectural style, are classic Chinese residences dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Similar to those found in Beijing's residential quarters, these homes are organized in groups of three or four buildings surrounding a square courtyard. Constructed with local materials such as wood and stone, the village comprises approximately 600 buildings grouped into 70 well-preserved neighborhoods maintained for over 500 years. Following the main street as it runs north to south through the village, you'll discover a rustic, charming, and ancient atmosphere.
Visiting Chuandixia historic village also reveals various historical remnants including temples, sculptures, ancient paintings, and calligraphy. By exploring the eastern section of the village, you can discover the Guandi Temple, the Temple of the Goddess of Fertility, and the Dragon King Temple. During your exploration, you'll appreciate the village's cultural and historical significance.
This cultural heritage reflects ancient village traditions and showcases family customs between parents and children, as well as family reunions within the Han family. You'll also find various sculptures of animals, birds, and flowers that differ from courtyard to courtyard.
During Chinese festivals such as Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival, and Qingming Festival, Chuandixia historic village transforms into a vibrant tableau. During these traditional ceremonies, tourists coming expressly from Beijing and surrounding regions can witness fireworks displays, offerings to deities, and participate in colorful lantern games. The Qingming Festival, an important occasion for locals to honor ancestors, brims with cultural activities.
Following the village's tourism development plan, some residences have been converted into inns and guesthouses. For those wishing to fully immerse themselves in this historic village, especially during annual festivities, you can easily spend a night here.
