Dongchuan Red Land: A Geological and Photographic Treasure of Yunnan
Dongchuan Red Land, nestled in the Dongchuan district near Kunming, is renowned for its grandiose landscapes, shaped by centuries of erosion and oxidation. Its unique geological formations, where iron minerals in the soil display striking hues, contribute to remarkable biodiversity. This vast expanse, situated at approximately 1,800 meters of altitude, extends mainly around the villages of Hongtudi and Huashitou.
The red soils of Dongchuan, rich in iron and aluminum, are considered among the world's most impressive examples of red earth, second only to those near Rio, in Brazil. Thanks to its exceptional environment, Dongchuan attracts numerous travelers, nature enthusiasts, and geology passionate seekers of unique landscapes. In particular, these lands have become a paradise for photographers, who capture these spectacular panoramas where each season reveals new nuances. Though discovered in the 1990s, this region long remained confidential, preserved by a handful of photographers who immortalized its colors through award-winning images.

- Shuipingzi
Nicknamed "the fields of the moon," these agricultural terraces are particularly magical under moonlight. Depending on the season, the rice paddies shift in hue, ranging from brilliant green to autumnal gold.
- The village of Luoxiagou
Known as the "Valley of the Sunset," this locality is one of the best spots to admire spectacular sunsets. The surrounding landscapes, with their verdant terraced fields and charming traditional villages, offer scenes worthy of postcards.
- The Ancient Tree of Lao Long
This thousand-year-old fir, located east of Huashitou, is venerated by local communities. It adds a mystical touch to the region, in striking contrast with the vast colorful expanses surrounding it.
- Yuepuao, or "Hollow Music"
Also called "hollow music," this photogenic region near Huashitou attracts many visitors, especially at dusk, when the terraced fields resemble a visual symphony.
- Wafang Liangzi
Known as the "Mosaic House Bridge," this area south of Yuepuao offers an impressive view of the surrounding hills and their mosaic patterns. Natural forms and terraced fields create a harmonious tableau of local countryside.
- Damakan
This site is celebrated for its spectacular sunrises, offering sweeping views of the red fields surrounded by mountains. To capture the best photos, it's advisable to arrive early.
- Qicaipo
Dubbed the "Seven-Color Slope," this area offers a spectacular view of fields in multiple hues, particularly vibrant during certain seasons. Even if all colors aren't visible on every visit, it remains a must-see site.
- Jinxiuyuan
Also called "embroidery garden," Jinxiuyuan is renowned for its rolling landscapes adorned with trees, colorful fields, and hills. It's a site offering a panoramic view of the entire region, perfect for photography enthusiasts or simply for admiring the peaceful beauty of nature.
When to Visit
The ideal period to explore Dongchuan Red Land lies between May and June, as well as between September and December, when the landscapes reach their visual peak. During these months, the striking colors of the red earth, which often intensify after rain, harmoniously blend with those of seasonal crops. To capture the best photos, it's advisable to plan your visits just after a downpour, when the hues are at their maximum intensity.
There are several ways to reach Dongchuan Red Land and explore its impressive landscapes from Kunming:
- By Bus
Head to Kunming North Bus Station to board one of two daily buses to the village of Fazhe (departures at 7:50 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.), then continue to Huashitou. The journey takes approximately 4 hours and costs around €5.50. If you wish to return to Kunming by bus, note that there are only two departures daily from Huashitou (at 8:30 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.). Remember to inform the driver that you wish to get off at Huashitou.
- By Taxi
Taking a taxi from Kunming will cost you an average of €13 to €20 for a standard car, a rate applicable for two people. If you're traveling in a larger group or with family, it's advisable to choose a minibus, which costs an average of €25 to €35.
- By Car
The option to rent a car in Kunming to reach Dongchuan Red Land is also available. Expect approximately 3.5 hours of driving, with rental costs around €20 to €25 per day. It's recommended to hire a driver or rent a vehicle locally to facilitate traveling between the various points of interest.
