Today
Shaoshan stands as a major destination for red tourism—travel centered on communist historical sites and attractions. As Mao Zedong's native village, this small town has become a pilgrimage site for history enthusiasts and those curious about China's revolutionary past.
Nestled in a misty valley, Shaoshan's fate might have been entirely different. The legacy left by the Great Helmsman opened the doors to a thriving tourism economy, displacing the tranquility that might otherwise prevail.
Numerous sites dedicated to Mao Zedong have sprung up throughout the town, though only a handful maintain genuine historical significance tied to the revolution and the Founding Father of the People's Republic of China.
Walk in Mao's footsteps by visiting the perfectly preserved Zedong family residence, maintained meticulously for visitors.
The Nanan School, where Mao received his early education, has been transformed into a small museum that chronicles his formative years.
Several memorials dot the city, including the monumental bronze statue of Mao Zedong at the town's entrance.
A complete visit to Shaoshan would be incomplete without stopping at one of Madame Mao's restaurants, where you can savor red-braised pork (Hong Shao), Mao's favorite dish.
Shops, restaurants, and tourist sites have all flourished around this iconic communist figure.
