A cosmopolitan quarter of Beijing, Sanlitun brings together embassies, shopping malls and bars. The go-to destination for international shopping and nightlife in Chaoyang District.

Sanlitun is a district in Chaoyang, Beijing, located approximately 1.5 km from Dongzhimen Bridge. This 260-meter-long street, divided into north and south sections, concentrates embassies, shopping centers, restaurants and bars, making it one of the capital's principal hubs for nightlife and international shopping.

Why visit Sanlitun

  • Historic diplomatic quarter transformed into a commercial and nightlife hub
  • High concentration of international brands and luxury boutiques
  • Thriving nightlife, with a large share of Beijing's bars clustered within a few streets
  • Cosmopolitan atmosphere shaped by the presence of 79 embassies and international organization offices
  • Street performances, theater venues dedicated to acrobatics and Chinese opera

District history

Sanlitun was originally a Legation quarter, where China hosted foreign ambassadors. The diplomatic quarter was officially relocated there in 1949, following the founding of the People's Republic of Chine. The street gradually developed into a commercial thoroughfare, though it remained relatively unknown for several decades.

In 2008, as part of urban renewal ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games, Sanlitun underwent major renovation and several bars were demolished. It was during this period that the district emerged as one of Beijing's principal nightlife centers. Its most recent major transformation dates to April 2016, with an update to the commercial offering and urban design.

What to see and do

Shopping and fashion

The southern section of Sanlitun features international ready-to-wear shops, accessories and sporting equipment. The north section concentrates luxury and jewelry boutiques in a more contemporary architectural setting. The retail offering evolves regularly, but major European and Asian houses maintain a permanent presence.

Nightlife

Sanlitun hosts a significant share of Beijing's bars (locally estimated at around 60%), spread across lounges, clubs and sports bars. During major football tournaments, several establishments set up giant screens and tables on the sidewalks, transforming the street into an open-air viewing zone.

Culture and entertainment

Dance troupes, magicians and street performers regularly perform in the quarter. Theater venues located in or near Sanlitun focus mainly on acrobatics and Chinese opera, two traditional arts accessible to foreign visitors.

Diplomatic presence

The quarter houses 79 embassies and 7 international offices, including the headquarters of UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund). This concentration explains the daily influx of foreigners and the cosmopolitan orientation of the shops.

When to visit

Sanlitun is worth visiting year-round. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the most pleasant conditions for strolling outdoors among shops and terraces. Summer is hot and humid but favorable for nightlife, which runs late. Beijing's winter is cold and dry: activity concentrates in covered shopping malls and bars. Evenings are most lively Thursday through Saturday, and during major international sporting events.
