Hongjiang is an historic trading town in the Hunan province. This charming historic city is well worth a stop during a journey through Hunan.

History

Hongjiang was established during the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127). It was developed under the Qing, who created the old quarters that remain today. During this period, Hongjiang was an important financial hub in western Hunan. The city subsequently became a thriving commercial center.

In 1997, Old Hongjiang and Qianyang merged to form the modern city of Hongjiang. However, residents of Old Hongjiang opposed the merger, and in 1999, Old Hongjiang became a special district.

Today

The primary reason to visit Hongjiang is undoubtedly the old town and its ancient quarters, characterized by narrow winding streets. Situated at the confluence of the Yuan and Wu rivers, this intimate city offers wonderful walks and historic landmarks.

It's a pleasure to wander through the streets and observe the old banks and merchant houses. Many have been recently restored while retaining their authentic charm. Several monuments deserve attention, including the Taiping Temple, the Pavilion of the God of Wealth, and the Great Buddha Temple, which houses impressive statues of Sakyamuni and the thousand-armed Guanyin.

Some streets create the impression of a quiet or dormitory town, drawing you into a distinctive atmosphere. Along the Wu riverside, restaurants serve local specialties.

Climbing the stone steps offers views across the old town's roofscape and sweeping vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Rain is very frequent in Hongjiang, even during the drier seasons. April through June sees the heaviest rainfall.

The annual average temperature is 17.6°C. July is the warmest month, averaging 28.4°C, while January is the coldest at 5.9°C.

The best time to visit Hongjiang is from September to November.
