Historic Village of Shexian
Just 25 km from Huangshan, Shexian preserves the soul of ancient Hui culture: sculpted archways, Ming-Qing residences and alleyways frozen in time.
Shexian is a cultural and historical city located just 25 km from the city of Huangshan in Anhui. The Shexian County at the foot of Mount Huang is surrounded by lush mountains and crystal-clear waterways. A true historical and cultural museum, the city of Shexian is well worth a visit during a journey through southern Chine.
History
Formerly called Huizhou, the city was once a major center of Huizhou culture and was named the capital of the Hui people. The beauty of the place has long attracted celebrities such as philosopher Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), inventor of movable type characters Bi Sheng, and Huang Binhong, a great modern painter.
Today
Shexian is a pleasant city that has managed to preserve all its former charm. Rich in cultural heritage, ancient residences and commemorative temples, the city captivates all visitors who venture there after a stay in Huangshan. Shexian indeed houses numerous historical remnants dating mostly from the Ming (1638–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. The surrounding landscape formed by mountains and waterways detracts nothing from the journey and offers a setting conducive to relaxation. As a former cultural center, Shexian once housed numerous schools in various artistic fields. The ancient residences with courtyard layouts stand intact in a style of architecture typical of the Hui. For some, it is possible to visit the interiors and thus observe the carvings and finishes of the superb interiors. The most interesting ones are found in the old residential neighborhood Doushan Jie. A few funeral temples and arcades add authenticity to the setting. The Xuguo Archway is particularly remarkable with its 12 lions seated around the pillars and its profusion of sculptures. The visit takes only a day but allows you to enter an entirely new world where time seems to have stood still.
Climate
Shexian can be visited throughout the year. Rainfall occurs mainly between May and August. During winter, Shexian is covered in a thick white veil, giving it an entirely different particular charm. Temperatures are neither too high nor too low, though it's still wise to bring sunscreen in summer and warm clothing in winter.
Shexian is easily accessible by bus from Huangshan. Buses run daily between the two cities.
The city visit is best done on foot through the alleyways.
