History
As one of the birthplaces of the Lingnan minority, Zhaoqing stands as a historic and cultural city with over 2,200 years of history. According to certain archaeological discoveries, human traces have been identified as dating back millions of years.
During the Qin (221–206 BC) and Han (206 BC–220 AD) dynasties, Zhaoqing was known as Gaoyao. The city was later called Duanzhou under the Sui dynasty (581–618 AD). At that time, Duanzhou was an important military base and administrative center. The city acquired its current name under the Northern Song dynasty in 1118.
Zhaoqing became the seat of the Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi and emerged as a major administrative hub for the province, welcoming the first Europeans to Chinese territory.
