History

With a history spanning 2,300 years, the city is also the birthplace of Chinese New Year.

Established as Langzhong County in 314 BCE, this settlement has been a vital hub in northern Sichuan for over two millennia. During the Warring States period, it briefly served as the capital of the State of Ba. Langzhong later became a major center for astronomical research in China during the Han and Tang dynasties.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it served as a temporary provincial capital for 17 years.

Since 1985, the PRC government has bestowed various honors on Langzhong on three occasions. In 1991, Langzhong was officially designated as a district-level city.

Today

Time seems to have paused in Langzhong, especially in the old town with its charming houses lining cobblestone alleyways. The city is defined by its rich and diverse culture, which spawned the Feng Shui philosophy, gave birth to the Spring Festival, and nurtured various religious traditions.

Situated along the middle course of the Jialing River, the waterway imparts a picturesque charm to this ancient settlement.

Relatively untouched by mass tourism compared to counterparts like Lijiang and Pingyao, the city has preserved its authenticity and peaceful character, promising a serene and enriching stay. Beyond the old town and its eclectic architecture, Langzhong offers numerous sites of interest.

For history enthusiasts, head to Zhang Fei Temple, which houses the tomb of Zhang Fei, a renowned general from the late Han Dynasty and the beginning of the Three Kingdoms period. Next, step into Dong Yuan, the Imperial Examination Hall, still remarkably well preserved.

At the foot of Daxiang Mountain, encounter one of Sichuan's greatest Buddhas and immerse yourself in the surrounding natural beauty.

The Scholars' Caves are small grottos where local scholars once prepared for their examinations. A modest temple and pond complete the setting, offering a delightful walking experience.

Don't miss Huaguang Tower, Langzhong's tallest structure and an embodiment of Feng Shui philosophy, or Zhongtian Tower, one of the old town's iconic ancient monuments.

Climate

Like most of Sichuan Province, Langzhong features a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with mild, dry winters and long hot, humid summers. The average daily temperature ranges from 6.1°C in January to 26.6°C in August.

The frost-free period extends 290 days annually, while annual sunshine reaches 1,400 hours. Approximately two-thirds of annual rainfall occurs from June through September.

The best times to visit Langzhong are spring (March to May) or autumn (late September to November).

From Chengdu, four daily buses depart for Langzhong. Sleeper buses are available, with departures between 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM.
