A 82.8-hectare forest peninsula south of Sanya, Luhuitou Park combines panoramic views over the bay, the legend of the deer, and sites connected to the Li ethnic minority.

Luhuitou Park occupies a forested peninsula 5 km south of Sanya, on the island of Hainan. Overlooking the South China Sea, this 82.8-hectare promontory offers expansive views over Sanya Bay and preserves a dense tropical forest dotted with sites connected to the legend that gave the place its name.

Why visit Luhuitou Park

Three reasons make Luhuitou a worthwhile stop. First, the viewpoint over Sanya Bay, particularly striking in late afternoon when light falls across the coastline. Second, the cultural dimension: the sculpture of the turning-head deer, the park's iconic symbol, illustrates a legend tied to the Li ethnic group, Hainan's indigenous people. Finally, the preserved tropical vegetation, rare around the edges of a fast-expanding resort destination like Sanya.

The site suits a half-day exploration, accessible to families and casual walkers thanks to a cable car that eliminates the need for a steep climb on foot.

History and the legend of the turning-head deer

Luhuitou means "the deer that turns its head." The legend, passed down by the Li people, tells of a young hunter who pursued a deer for days across Hainan's mountains until reaching this peninsula. Cornered at the cliff's edge, the animal turned around and transformed into a young woman. The hunter, smitten, gave up the hunt and settled with her on the hillside, where they built a farm together.

The tale, deeply rooted in Li culture, justified the park's development and the construction, atop the hill, of a large sculpture depicting the deer at the moment it turns its head. Today, the work serves as the site's visual landmark and appears on most of Sanya's tourism materials.

What to see in the park

The deer sculpture

Positioned at the hill's highest point, the turning-head deer sculpture is the park's central feature. It marks the main vantage point and offers the best views over Sanya Bay below.

Thematic sites

Several installations dot the trails and draw on the legend's narrative or the site's natural elements:

  • Halley observation station, situated on the hillside;
  • the red Guanghai kiosk, a covered viewpoint;
  • Lover's Island and Mountain of Signs, stages in the hunter's story;
  • Deer House and the Li ethnic people's cabin, evoking local culture;
  • Turtle Sky and Immortal Pond, natural points of interest.

Forest and panorama

The 82.8 hectares of forest cover the entire peninsula and shelter abundant tropical vegetation. From the upper vantage points, views sweep across Sanya Bay, the harbor, and on clear days, the horizon of the South China Sea. Late afternoon remains the most popular time for this perspective.

Practical information

  • Visit duration: allow 2 to 3 hours to walk the main sites and enjoy the panorama.
  • Admission: paid entry at moderate rates; additional charge for the cable car. Check current prices before your visit.
  • Opening hours: open daily, typically from morning to late afternoon. Hours vary by season.
  • What to bring: closed-toe shoes for the trails, water, hat, and sun protection essential in warm seasons.

When to go

Hainan enjoys a tropical climate marked by a hot, humid season from May to October, and a drier, milder season from November to April. For Luhuitou, November to March remains most pleasant: bearable temperatures, lower humidity, often clear skies. In summer, heat and the risk of typhoons make the walk more challenging.

Whatever the season, late afternoon, when light falls across the bay, offers the best conditions for the panorama.

How to get there

The park lies 5 km south of central Sanya, making it easily accessible from most hotels in the city.

  • By bus: lines 2 and 4 serve the park entrance.
  • By taxi or ride-share: a short trip from central Sanya; the most convenient option for groups.
  • On site: a cable car takes you to the summit with no effort. Marked trails for those preferring the climb on foot.

Nearby attractions

Luhuitou fits easily into a Sanya stay. Dadonghai and Yalong Bay beaches lie a few kilometers away, as does Nanshan Buddhist Park, west of the city. To extend your exploration of China's landscapes further southwest, Cangshan in Yunnan or the Great Buddha of Leshan in Sichuan round out a trip focused on nature and religious heritage.
