Name: Sanya

Chinese name: 三亚

Province: Hainan

Status: Prefecture-level city

Population: 685,408 inhabitants

Area: 1,905 km²

Sanya is a genuine beach resort city at the southern edge of the island province of Hainan. This rapidly developing city is, quite deservedly, the new preferred destination for those seeking pristine beaches and idyllic scenery.

History

The city of Sanya, formerly known as Yazhou, was once used as an exile location for officials who had fallen from favor.

In 1912, Yazhou was renamed Yaxian. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the area was occupied by Japanese forces and became an important Japanese naval port.

In late 1987, Yaxian officially became the city of Sanya. The city faced numerous economic difficulties before breakthrough in tourism and experienced unprecedented growth.

In 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007, Sanya hosted the prestigious Miss World pageant, which significantly boosted its visibility on the global stage.

Today

In recent years, Sanya has emerged as a destination of choice for both Chinese and international travelers. Its brand-new facilities entirely dedicated to tourism have transformed it into a genuine beach resort that rivals any of the more established destinations.

Its coastline stretches nearly 40 km and features idyllic beaches flanked by luxury resort complexes and a vibrant modern city. Brilliant sunshine, warmth, pure air, and a relaxed atmosphere quickly foster an environment conducive to relaxation.

The city, which continues to invest in welcoming visitors, never stops innovating, as evidenced by the famous artificial island Phoenix Island and its impressive hotel complexes.

The crescent-shaped Dadonghai Beach is a beautiful stretch lined with restaurants. Being quite busy, arrive early in the day to secure a spot under one of the umbrellas. Even more spectacular, Yalong Bay reveals 7 km of white sand bordered by coconut palms and luxury hotels.

Both bays offer water sports activities to enliven your days. Jet skiing, bodyboarding, or snorkeling are available for the more adventurous.

The small Luhuitou peninsula offers magnificent sunsets and access to secluded small beaches.

As night falls, the city comes alive, terraces fill with diners, and a pleasant, jovial atmosphere takes over. Dinner provides the perfect opportunity to savor local specialties.

Climate

Sanya enjoys a tropical climate that keeps the city warm throughout the year. The average annual temperature hovers around 25°C.

Outside the monsoon season from July to October, it's possible to take a vacation in Sanya year-round. November to March is the driest period with more comfortable temperatures.

Visitor numbers spike during Chinese holiday periods, particularly around Chinese New Year.

Remember to bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays.

Air

Sanya Phoenix Airport is well-connected to major cities throughout China. Regular flights link the beach resort to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Kunming.

Train

The city is served by trains from Haikou and other regional cities.

Bus

Buses operate between Sanya and most cities on Hainan.

Minibuses run along the coast and are relatively inexpensive.

Motorcycle taxis roam the streets and will readily solicit your business. Don't hesitate to negotiate the fare.

Taxis are also available to take you to the beach.
