Perched above Longji's terraced rice paddies, the Yao and Zhuang village of Tiantouzhai features three observation platforms and a well-preserved village atmosphere.

Tiantouzhai village sits 23 km northeast of Longji's ticket office, in Longsheng County (Guangxi Province). Nestled at 800 meters elevation at the foot of a mountain, it ranks among the finest vantage points over Longji's terraced rice paddies, alongside Dazhai, Ping'An, and Huangluohong.

Why visit Tiantouzhai

Tiantouzhai combines two major attractions of northern Guangxi: agricultural landscape sculpted into mountainsides and living cultural heritage carried by Yao and Zhuang communities. Unlike Ping'An, which is more accessible and crowded, Tiantouzhai requires a walk from Dazhai, filtering part of the tourist flow and preserving an authentic village atmosphere.

The rice paddies here are narrow and steep, terraced on slopes like contour lines. Depending on the season, water, young shoots, or golden ears transform the landscape entirely. Three observation platforms positioned above the village offer complementary viewing angles.

What to see in Tiantouzhai

The village and its architecture

Tiantouzhai is a Yao and Zhuang village, two Chinese minorities present in the Longji region. Houses are nearly all built from bamboo, in ochre tones, standing two or three stories high, and covered with black tiles. The ensemble forms a homogeneous architectural pattern descending the slope with the terraces.

Inhabitants still wear traditional clothing daily. Women are recognizable by their heavy earrings, which elongate the earlobes over years, and their very long hair, a strong identity marker of the Red Yao.

The three observation platforms

The site features three observation centers numbered 1 to 3:

  • Platform No. 1: accessible by cable car from the village.
  • Platform No. 2: located along the hiking trail connecting Tiantouzhai to Dazhai, it requires effort on foot.
  • Platform No. 3: also served by cable car, it opens the widest view over the summit terraces.

The cable car helps avoid the steepest ascent and proves useful in humid weather, when trails become slippery.

When to visit

Seasonality shapes the experience more than at most Chinese sites, as the rice paddies change dramatically throughout the year.

  • April–May: terraces are flooded and rice is transplanted. The basins reflect the sky and create tiered mirrors, particularly photogenic at sunrise and sunset.
  • June to August: shoots turn the entire slope green. The hottest and wettest season, with fog risk but also sea-of-clouds displays at dawn.
  • Mid-September to mid-October: the golden period leading into harvest. This is the most prized window—favor weekdays to avoid China's National Day week (early October) if you wish to sidestep crowds.
  • December–January: snow is possible on the terraces, transforming them into a very different mineral landscape.

How to get there

Tiantouzhai is not accessible directly by car; arrival is on foot from Dazhai.

  • From Guilin, allow approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by bus to reach Longji's rice terrace park.
  • Once past the ticket office, shuttle buses serve Dazhai village (main parking on the park's north side).
  • From Dazhai, allow approximately 45 minutes of uphill walking to reach Tiantouzhai.
  • The Ping'An ticket office, located 19 km from Dazhai, is the park's other entry point, with shuttles and buses.

Wear good shoes: the trails are stone and can be slippery after rain.

Practical information

  • Entrance ticket: one ticket covers the entire Longji rice terrace park and remains valid for several days, allowing you to visit both Tiantouzhai and Ping'An.
  • Cable car: paid separately, with distinct fares for one-way and round-trip.
  • Accommodation: many guesthouses run by Yao and Zhuang families allow you to stay in the village. A night here remains the best way to enjoy sunrise over the terraces.
  • Portage: at Dazhai, porters offer to carry luggage up to village guesthouses.

Frequently asked questions

One day is enough to reach the village, visit an observation platform, and return. To catch sunrise or sunset over the terraces, plan an overnight stay.

Tiantouzhai offers the most authentic village atmosphere and direct access to platforms 1 and 3. Dazhai is more convenient logistically, Ping'An more accessible but more crowded.

No. Hikers can reach the platforms on foot via the trails. The cable car remains useful for saving time, sparing your legs, or in rainy weather.

Two windows stand out: the flooding in late April–May, which turns terraces into mirrors, and the golden period from mid-September to mid-October, just before harvest.
