Huangguoshu Waterfall
Huangguoshu Waterfall
China's largest waterfall, Huangguoshu stretches 81 m wide and 74 m high in the heart of a 450 km² karst national park, 50 km from Anshun.
The Huangguoshu Waterfall, China's largest cascade, rises approximately 50 km from Anshun and 110 km from Guiyang, in Guizhou province. Spanning 81 metres wide and 74 metres high, it forms the heart of a 450 km² national park blending waterfalls, limestone caves and karst terrain.
Why visit Huangguoshu Waterfall
Three compelling reasons justify the journey to this south-western Chinese site:
- Record-breaking dimensions: at 81 metres wide and 74 metres high, Huangguoshu is China's largest waterfall and among Asia's most voluminous cascades.
- A coherent geological ensemble: the main fall is part of a 450 km² network that includes the Doupotang waterfall and the Water Curtain Cave, all accessible from the same park.
- A rare immersive experience: a trail allows you to walk behind the water curtain and feel the power of the cascade just metres away.
History and site recognition
While the waterfall has been known to local populations for centuries, it was in the 1980s that the surrounding hydrological network was systematically mapped during surveys on the region's hydroelectric potential. This work revealed the extent of the karst system and accelerated the site's tourism development.
On 8 November 1982, the area was officially designated a National Park, guaranteeing protection of the falls, caves and limestone formations across all 450 km². This protection enabled the gradual development of trails and observation platforms while preserving the landscape's integrity.
What to see in the park
The main cascade
Huangguoshu Waterfall can be viewed from several arranged vantage points: elevated viewing platforms to grasp the entire fall, lower platforms to approach the reception basin, and lateral trails skirting the rock face. The roar carries several kilometres during the rainy season, and fine water spray can reach the neighbouring village during heavy floods.
The Water Curtain Cave
Accessible by a hillside trail, the Water Curtain Cave is a 134-metre limestone cavity running behind the waterfall. It is punctuated with natural windows opening onto the water wall, allowing you to observe the cascade from within. Bring waterproof clothing and protection for your camera: the passage is under continuous rainfall.
The Doupotang Waterfall
Approximately 1 km from the main fall, the Doupotang Waterfall stands out for its exceptional width of 105 metres. Water cascades down several tiers reaching 20 metres high, fed upstream by a pond of 15,000 m². Less tall than Huangguoshu, it compensates with its horizontal span and distributed flow.
When to go
Guizhou's climate is subtropical and humid: it rains for much of the year and mist is frequent in the park.
- Dry season (November to April): reduced flow, peaceful atmosphere, less slippery trails. This is the most comfortable period for hiking and panoramic photography.
- Rainy season (May to October): the waterfall reaches its full power, the roar can be heard several kilometres away and rainbows form regularly over the basin. Trails are also at their most slippery during this time.
In any case, wear good hiking shoes and bring a waterproof windbreaker.
